How to Dodge a Nasty Cold or Flu

Sick of suffering through the sniffles? Next time you feel a cold coming on try one of these strategies to bring it to a dead halt.
Use Your Knuckle to Rub Your Eyes

It’s less likely to be contaminated with viruses than your fingertip. This is particularly important because the eye provides a perfect entry point for germs, and the average person rubs his eyes or nose or scratches his face 20-50 times a day, notes Jordan Rubin, Ph.D., author The Maker’s Diet.
Nuke Your Toothbrush on High for 10 Seconds

You think it gets your teeth clean—and it does. But once you’re done brushing, your toothbrush is a breeding ground for germs. Sterilize it in the microwave before you use it, or simply replace it every month, or after you’ve had a cold.
Wash Your Hands and Wash Them Often

The U.S.-based Naval Health Research Center conducted a study of 40,000 recruits who were ordered to wash their hands five times a day. The recruits cut their incidence of respiratory illnesses by 45 per cent.
    Carry Hand Sanitizer With You

Carry hand sanitizer gel or sanitizing towelettes with you and you can clean your hands anytime, even if the closest water supply is 100 miles away. It works. One study of absenteeism due to infection in elementary schools found schools using the gel sanitizer had absentee rates from infection nearly 20 per cent lower than those using other hand-cleaning methods.
    Don’t Play the Blame Game

Believe it or not, blaming yourself makes you more likely to catch a cold! At least, that’s what researchers found when they studied more than 200 workers over three months. Even those who had control over their work were more likely to begin sneezing if they lacked confidence or tended to blame themselves when things went wrong.
Put a Box of Tissues Wherever People Sit

Buy a six or twelve-pack of tissue boxes and strategically place them around the house, your workplace, and your car. Don’t let aesthetics thwart you. You need tissues widely available so that anyone who has to cough or sneeze or blow his nose will do so in the way least likely to spread germs.
Leave the Windows Open a Crack in Winter

Not all of them, but one or two in the rooms in which you spend the most time. This is particularly important if you live in a newer home, where fresh circulating air has been the victim of energy efficiency. A bit of fresh air will do wonders for chasing out germs.
Lower the Heat in Your House Five Degrees

The dry air of an overheated home provides the perfect environment for cold viruses to thrive. And when your mucous membranes (nose, mouth, and tonsils) dry out, they can’t trap those germs very well. Lowering the temperature and using a room humidifier helps maintain a healthier level of humidity in the winter.
Speaking of Which, Buy a Hygrometer

These little tools measure humidity. You want your home to measure around 50 per cent. A consistent measure higher than 60 per cent means mold and mildew may start to set in your walls, fabrics, and kitchen; lower than 40 per cent and the dry air makes you more susceptible to germs.
Sit in a Sauna Once a Week

Why? Because an Austrian study published in 1990 found that volunteers who frequently used a sauna had half the rate of colds during the six-month study period than those who didn’t use a sauna at all. It’s possible that the hot air you inhale kills cold viruses. Most gyms have saunas these days.
    Inhale Air From Your Blow-Dryer

It sounds nuts, we know. But one study conducted at Harvard Hospital in England found that people who breathed heated air had half the cold symptoms of people who inhaled air at room temperature. Set the dryer on warm, not hot, and hold it at least 18 inches from your face. Breathe in the air through your nose for as long as you can—20 minutes is best.
    A Garlic Supplement a Day

When 146 volunteers received either one garlic supplement a day or a placebo for 12 weeks between November and February, those taking the garlic were not only less likely to get a cold, but if they did catch one, their symptoms were less intense and they recovered faster.
Eat a Container of Yogourt Every Day

A study from the University of California-Davis found that people who ate one cup of yogourt—whether live culture or pasteurized—had 25 percent fewer colds than non-yogurt eaters. Start your yogourt eating in the summer to build up your immunity before cold and flu season starts.
    Don’t Be Lazy With Laundry

Change or wash your hand towels every three or four days during cold and flu season. When you wash them, use hot water in order to kill the germs.

    Freshen Your Feet

Do people turn up their noses when you slip off your shoes? Has the family dog fallen in love with your footwear? Suffer no more! You can stop smelly feet with these simple home remedies.

    Give Feet the Underarm Treatment

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the same antiperspirant you use on your underarms can also keep feet less sweaty (and therefore less smelly). Simply spray or roll it on before putting on your shoes and socks.

Wash your feet daily in warm water using a deodorant soap or antibacterial soap.
    Turn Up the Heat

Especially if you are prone to athlete’s foot or nail fungus, blow-dry your feet with a hair dryer that’s turned to the lowest temperature. This helps avoid infection and reduces moisture.
    Soak ’Em and Scent ’Em

Try a black tea footbath. Boil two tea bags in two cups of water for 15 minutes. Remove the bags and dilute the tea with two quarts of water. Let the mixture cool down if necessary, then soak your feet for 30 minutes. Repeat daily. The tannic acid in strong black tea kills bacteria and closes pores to help your feet sweat less.

Make an odour-fighting foot soak by adding a cup of vinegar to a basin of warm water. For more odour-fighting force, add a few drops of thyme oil. The oil contains a strong antiseptic that kills odor-causing bacteria. Soak your feet for 15 to 20 minutes a day for a week. (Off-limits...if you have any open sores or broken skin.)

If you don’t have access to thyme oil, you can easily buy a product that contains it: Listerine. Try adding a splash to your footbath. (The same cautions as with thyme oil apply.)
    Fragrant Foot Rub

Lavender oil not only smells good, it helps kill bacteria. Rub a few drops onto your feet and massage it in before you go to bed at night. Cover your feet with socks. Before trying this remedy, check to make sure the oil won’t irritate your skin by putting one drop on a small area.
    Salt Your Dogs

Mix two cups of Epsom salt into a basin half-full with warm water. Soak your feet for 15 minutes twice a day. The Epsom salt acts as an astringent to reduce sweating, and may kill bacteria.
    Try an Acne Treatment

Apply benzoyl peroxide 5% or 10% gel to the bottoms of your feet to fight bacteria. Why not? It works on your face.
    Powder Power

Dust your feet with talcum powder or foot powder before you put on your shoes and socks. It will absorb odour-causing sweat.

Two other good foot powders to try are baking soda, which neutralizes odor, and cornstarch, which absorbs moisture.
Dress Well for a Better Smell
Change your socks at least once a day, replacing them with a clean pair.
Alternate between at least two pairs of shoes. After you’ve worn one pair, set them aside and let them air out for at least twenty-four hours.
Wear shoes with open-mesh sides or sandals that allow your feet to “breathe.” Your feet will also breathe better if you wear cotton socks rather than polyester.
    Treat Shoes with Savvy
Check the care instructions on your athletic shoes. If they’re washable, toss them into the washing machine at least once a month.
Store your shoes in a place that’s bright and ventilated—not in a dark closet, where bacteria thrive.
Each time you put your shoes away, insert a sachet filled with cedar chips into them. You can also try products that consist of mesh pouches filled with zeolite. Zeolite is a natural volcanic mineral that attracts odors and traps them. Expose the reusable pouch to the sun for six hours to discharge the collected odors.
Buy odour-absorbing insoles and cut them to fit. Replace them every three to six months.
If your shoes have removable insoles, take them out to dry every time you remove your shoes. And toss them in the washer from time to time.
